Open Rails General Locomotive Parameters for Advanced Modellers

Aim - this section describes the ADVANCED settings for general (for steam, diesel, and electric) related parameters in Open Rails (OR) ENG files.

Open Rails uses a series of default values for most ADVANCED parameters, but these can be overwritten by the user.

NB: These parameters are intended for advanced modellers who have an understanding of the information required, and have access to appropriate information.

If you wish to provide any feedback on this page, please use the contact page. It would br great to have some feedback as this helps to ensure the accuracy of the information and models.

Track Sanding Systems

Track Sanding Systems

Track Sanding Systems are used to maintain adhesion for locomotive when pulling loads. In reality there are a number of different sand propulsion types of sanding systems, either Gravity, Air or Steam. OR currently models the last two systems.

To set up the sanding system with non default values, the following parameters need to be configred in the ENG file.

General

SandingSystemType ( x ) , where x = either "Air" or "Steam".
Sanding ( x ) , where x = Speed value where sanding cuts out. Sanding becomes less effective at higher speeds, and provides not much additional adhesion.
ORTSMaxTrackSanderBoxCapacity ( x ) , where x = Maximum volume of sand in sander box. Default UoM - ft^3.
ORTSMaxTrackSanderSandConsumptionForward ( x ) , where x = volume of sand used per second for the sander(s) located in front of any wheels. Default UoM - ft^3.
ORTSMaxTrackSanderSandConsumptionReverse ( x ) , where x = volume of sand used per second for the sander(s) located behind any of the wheels. Default UoM - ft^3.

Air System

ORTSMaxTrackSanderAirConsumptionForward ( x ) , where x = volume of air used per second for the sander(s) located in front of any wheels. Default UoM - ft^3.
ORTSMaxTrackSanderAirConsumptionReverse ( x ) , where x = volume of air used per second for the sander(s) located behind any of the wheels. Default UoM - ft^3.

Steam System

ORTSMaxTrackSanderSteamConsumptionForward ( x ) , where x = volume of steam used per second for the sander(s) located in front of any wheels. Default UoM - lb.
ORTSMaxTrackSanderSteamConsumptionReverse ( x ) , where x = volume of steam used per second for the sander(s) located behind any of the wheels. Default UoM - lb.

Steam sanders will also emit some steam so steam effects can be added as described on the Steam effects page.

Typical example settings, assuming 2 x sanders with a sanding rate of 1.5lbs/min with two sanding nozzles. Information from sand blasting systemssand blasting systems might provide a useful reference for obtaining some consumption values:

ORTSMaxTrackSanderBoxCapacity ( 28.0ft^3 ) Comment ( Assumed similar to early era main line diesel locomotive )
   ORTSMaxTrackSanderSandConsumptionForward ( 0.0004888ft^3 ) Comment ( Assume required sand consumption of 1.5lb/min = 0.88ft^3/hr = 0.0002444ft^3/sec x 2 sanders )
   ORTSMaxTrackSanderAirConsumptionForward ( 0.5ft^3 ) Comment ( Assume 15cfm @ 140psi = 0.25ft^/sec, nozzle = 1/16" x 2 sanders )
   ORTSMaxTrackSanderAirConsumptionForward ( 0.5ft^3 ) Comment ( Assume 15cfm @ 140psi = 0.25ft^/sec, nozzle = 1/16" x 2 sanders, assume Rev = Fwd )
